Structural Engineers
Structural Engineers specialise in the integrity of a building’s structure.
They will inspect problems with foundations, walls and roofs. If your home is showing signs of subsidence or heave in the foundations, movement or cracking of the walls or sagging of the ceiling or the roofline, this may indicate a problem with the structure of a property. Such signs should be investigated by a Structural Engineer.
In the case of fire damage to a house a General Structural Inspection by a Structural Engineer may be required to assess the stability of the building
A Structural Engineer will also provide design calculations relating to structural changes to existing buildings or new buildings, in compliance with the current building regulations and may require to be submitted to your local Building Control authority. Structural Engineers can often provide expertise relating to Party Wall issues.
Professional Qualifications of Structural Engineers
A Chartered Structural Engineer will be a member of the IStructE (Institution of Structural Engineers) or a member of the ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) and will have after his or her name the letters MIStructE, FIStructE, MICE or FICE. Not all Structural Engineers are chartered, despite being experienced professionals.
Structural Inspections
Structural Inspections generally fall into two categories;
- General Structural Inspection (GSI), where the requirement is for a full structural inspection of a property. In the case of flood or fire damage to a house a General Structural Inspection by a Structural Engineer may be required to assess the stability of the damaged building.
- Specific Structural Inspection (SSI), where the inspection required is for specific area of a property, such as a chimney breast, gable wall or roofline.
Estimates for General Structural Inspection (GSI) and Specific Structural Inspection (SSI), will be given in response to a search for a Structural Engineer to carry out a structural inspection.
If you require more information about the interior of the property then, instead of a Structural Inspection, you may be better to commission a Building Survey from a Building Surveyor. Before appointing a supplier and placing an order you should ensure that your chosen supplier has satisfactory qualifications, accreditation, experience and insurance to provide the level of service that you require.
